World Cup 2 from the Olympic Course in Munich 18th to 20th June Day3 The End Game - report could have done better? 2 Gold and 2 Silver
20/6/2010 Report to follow 19/6/2020 Day 2 You win some you lose some but the end result will be the same. After the misfortune that struck GER in the heat of the M4x they made no mistake of their semifinal beating CRO and the World Champion Polish crew. NZL were the best of the rest in this a race of 2 halves. The Womens quad showed a great turn of speed in the second half of the race coming from 5th to 2nd and secure a place in the finals. The early lead SUI will be disappointed with this as they appeared to have the 2nd qualifying place under control but in the end perhaps the addition of Fi Patterson to the NZL crew made all the difference. This was a much better performance. In the mens LW2x Uru and Taylor took a solid 2nd place behind GER both crews finishing comfortably ahead of CHN 1 the other finals qualifier. Like the M2x Emma Twigg never got a sniff of a finals spot. Outgunned from the start by not only Karsten but also the AUS2 sculler Crow and Lavina from Russia she managed to edge past the CHN 3 sculler for 4th place but well back from the leaders. This race was also notable for the control that Karsten showed, overtaken in the 3rd 500 by crow and appearing beaten by the Australian she times her run to the line perfectly winning by 0.2 secs Cohen and Sullivan will be disappointed with this race and were never really in the mix. Surprised at the start by GBR and FRA they never got back into the race and finished 5th. A win in the B finals will restore some confidence ahead of Henley and Lucerne The Mens Pair showed great control through the middle section of their semifinal reeling in the fast starting Serbians. Romania held a comfortable 2nd place to also qualify for the A final tomorrow In the Womens pair Haigh and Scown made sure of their win from the start holding a 2 second lead throughout the race and covering every move that the chasing bunch made It was business as usual for Duncan Grant as he showed why he is the World Champion the lightweight single. He held a 3 second lead by the 1000 and then sat out in front while the order changed behind him. He must be the favorite for the A final in a few hours time. In the final the Hungarian Sculler, who had looked threatening all week proved too strong over the final 500 meters and what had been a close blattle early on saw hime beat Duncan Grant by 3secs. Grant managed to hold out the fast finishing Norwegian. For the Mens four it was success for NZL1 who held second place throughout most of the race behind AUS2 only to be caught in the final run to the line by AUS1. They will be pleased with the turn of speed that they had through the middle section and the AUS2 crew showed that they are no slouches. Their time in the heat was quicker than GBR. For NZL2 they made sure that they went down fighting leading GBr at teh 500, GBR just got ahead of them at teh 1000 and by the 1500 the USA and CZE were also ahead. They faded badly in the final 500 with Serbia taking 4th place and the Kiwis holding off CHN2.
Why are the All whites not playing tonight - their match against the World Champions, Italy, would dovetail nicely with the World Cup Regatta in Munich. With a schedule of racing for New Zealand crews from 7:54 pm through to 3:10am NZ time on sunday a 2pm start for the football would be a welcome addition. Yes folks it will be a long night for those with sporting desires as the All Blacks will be finished really early on. So the line up for tonight is (NZ times): 8:00 pm Semifinal A/B LM1x, 8:18 M1x E Final, 9:47 and 9:57 M4- Semifinals, Midnight W2- Semi, 12:16 M2- Semi 12:56 M2x Semi, 1:04 W1x Semi, 1:36 LM2x Semi, 2:08 W4x Repechage 1-2 to final 2:24 M4x Semi, 3:10 LM1x A Final
18/6/2010 Day 1 Racing All crews into the Semis or reps with passage to the finals Soory to Michael Arms the team spare racing in the Mens 1x. He was subjected to the tough quarter final schedule and as he finished in last place in the heat will contest the Mens 1x E Final Later on in the day Duncan Grant sculled well to lead his quarter final from start to finish. The first 3 qualified for the semifinals. Both men's coxless fours finished 2nd in their respective repechages to ensure a place in the cut throat world of semifinal racing tomorrow. Once again their placing should ensure they are in separate semifinals and in an outside lane.
Morning The Team were led off as usual by Duncan Grant with a win in the ML1x Heat. With the first three only progressing to the cut-throat quarter finals later in the day ( about 1:am NZ time) The Women's pair, Men's Pair and Men's Double have all progressed with wins thus avoiding another race today. The Mens 4, after putting up a strong showing the NZL 2 crew were rowed down by Serbia in the closing stages of the race, won by Australia 2, and finished 3rd with the NZL No 1 crew finishing 4th. This should ensure they are in separate Reps this afternoon. Uru and Taylor make no mistakes and win their heat to progress to the Semifinals tomorrow afternoon. Quite even times by al the heat winners. - full results later. With Fi Paterson on board replacing an injured Harriet Austin the W4x put up a creditable row to take 2nd place behind an experienced and multiple world champion Ukrainian crew, They will row in a repechage tomorrow afternoon. The Mens Quad - when all seemed to be lost and the NZL crew seemed to be rowing over for a repechage the Germans, in 2nd place at the time, catch a massive crab and one of the scullers stops the remaining three members of the crew are unable to hold off the NZLers as they smell an opportunity to qualify. They wern't expecting that! W1x in the final NZ race of the morning Emma wins from Poland who take the direct qualifying places. Looks like the webcams are disconnected!! 15/6/2010 With the SKY Schedule released: Munich LIVE 20/06/2010 19:45 SKY Sport 3 It shows that they are only prepared to take the A finals that NZ are involved in. It is a pity that this scant coverage has allowed them to dictate to FISA and stop the transmission of the webcast feed to New Zealand. Hopefully the schedule will not be changed to a delayed coverage as was scheduled for Bled. While they are the host Broadcaster for the 2010 World Champs they should not be exercising their monopoly this way. If the webcast feed is to be blocked to New Zealand they should be committed to covering the regatta meaningfully and as fully as possible. At the very least showing all the A finals and a package each day of the racing. We do not need New Zealand commentators so Mike Stanley does not need to be in the studio here in NZ commentating off the monitor. The experienced commentators serve us well enough. So SKY either do a proper job or allow the webcast. ---- As if this is likely!!
10/6/2010 News from the NZ rowing Camp is not good. More injuries and substitutions Reports indicate that Anna Reymer has not traveled to Europe for the World cups due to a disc injury that has flared up and Fiona Paterson will replace Harriet Austin (rib stress fracture) in the Quad for Munich and likely to join Emma Twigg in the Single sculls event at Henley - an all NZ final now that would be worth a visit!. Mahe is traveling but will not contest Munich. Expect to see Mahe in the Diamonds at Henley and the single in Lucerne 8/6/2010By this time the full New Zealand elite team will be in Europe. It is unclear whether Mahe will race at this regatta as he continues to recover from a serious back injury. He has a history of returning stronger than before from back injuries. He made a remarkable recovery after being hit by a water skier. We will need to wait and see what the managers decide. |
