Once again Rowing  dominates the finalists in the Halberg Awards, due to be announced in February.

Four time world Champion Mahe Drysdale leads the finalsist for rowing after a stellar year - only being beaten at the Head of the Charles (in the single).  Chasing hard with World Titles is 3 times World Lightweight Singles champion Duncan Grant.  This performance is no less impressive considering that he won his third consecutive title from the outside lane after failing to fire in the earlier rounds at Poznan.

 Mahe - December 2009

In the teams there are the Double world Champions Eric Murray and Hamish Bond.  Having won their first world title in the coxless four this new combination camer together after the 2008 Olympics and have also had an unbeaten year - including ahugely successful raid on the Silver GOblets and Nickalls Challenge cup at Henley where they no only outcalssed the top British combination (again) but were described by the commentator as "...and example of the finest pair oar rowing I have ever seen..."

Also in the teams is the men's lightweight double scull of Storm Uru and Peter Taylor. They also were crowned world champions in Poznan in this very competitive arena.

Richard Tonks is the Coach responsible for these and the other great performances by the rowing team and he is justifiably nominated in the Coach of the Year category.

The development programme is recognised by the Nomination of Robbie Manson in the emerging talent category which carries a $15,000 scholarship.  The current holder of this scholarship is Rowings Emma Twigg.

 So who will win:

Mahe for the Men

The Men's Pair for the team

Valerie Villi for the women

Richard for the Coach (3 current world champions)

Mahe - overall Halberg winner

PS

An interesting opinion piece has popped up on stuff and presents a logical reason to have another category in the Halberg Awards - Here
